Mid-Fi Electronics Another/An-other (Clean Version) Pedal Review

This version keeps all the unique chorus, vibrato, and tremolo-inspired movement of the original but ditches the fuzz for a cleaner, more defined tone. It reacts dynamically to your playing, adding a touch of unpredictability that keeps things interesting. Whether you want a gentle shimmer or a seasick wobble, this pedal delivers with pure, unfiltered modulation magic.

        Get to the Chopper

I love analog pedals that cross the tremolo-to-ring mod gap. The Another/An-Other has a hard square wave chop that has a subtle modulated kind of sound to it. I'm glad I went with this one without the fuzz built in, because it plays nice with my other fuzzes. The rate of the tremolo is frequency input dependent, so higher frequencies it "hears" make it chop faster and lower frequencies make it go slower. Interestingly, as one note rings, most settings will allow the note fading out to also slow the tremolo down for a nice stutter effect. It also interacts nicely with other effects in front of it like a wah-wah, which can make it speed up and slow down as you rock the wah. Its one knob has only 12 detented positions, which actually is a good thing because sometimes these analog trem/ring mods can be very fiddly when you want to recreate a sound later. One downside is that I mostly play bass and the Another's range isn't all that friendly to bass. While there is no loss of low-end output, the main registers of the bass guitar are low enough in frequency input that it makes only 4 or so of the notches useful. After that, the tremolo is so slow that it becomes only intermittently audible. You can help it out by playing above the 12th fret, but it is a limitation. Settings 1 and 2 with the bass do still reach speeds fast enough for some ring mod sounds, including a pretty fat analog sub-octave! However, it's much better suited for guitar or keys and has a very lively, organic stuttering effect when you want to be free from that dreaded LFO rhythmic prison for the whole duration of the song. Build wise, it is cleanly manufactured, completely solid in feel, and has a very eye-catching appearance.
