Different Types of Mics: Dynamic, Condenser, Ribbon, USB, and More
Still figuring out which mic you need? Here’s a guide to the most popular types and how they work:
-
Dynamic Microphones: Dynamic mics use a moving coil and a magnetic field to convert sound waves into electrical signals. These microphones are highly durable, can handle high sound pressure levels, and don’t need phantom power, making them perfect for live performances and amplifying loud instruments like drums and guitar amps.
-
Condenser Microphones: Using a diaphragm, either large or small, and a backplate to create an electrical signal, condenser mics are highly sensitive and can capture fine details with unmatched clarity. This type of microphone requires phantom power (48V) and is ideal for studio recordings, especially for vocals, acoustic instruments, and ambient sound.
- Ribbon Microphones: Ribbon mics record audio by suspending a thin metal “ribbon” between magnetic poles that vibrates with sound waves. These microphones are known for having a warm, natural sound and are often used for recording vocals, brass, and strings. Most modern ribbon mics require phantom power, however some vintage models may not. It’s best to consult the ribbon mic’s manual.
-
USB Microphones: USB mics have built-in analog-to-digital converters, allowing direct connection to computers via USB. These plug-and-play mics don’t need phantom power and are designed for convenience, making them excellent for podcasting, streaming, and remote meetings.
Other Specialty Mics:
- Lavalier Microphones: Lavs or clip-on microphones are tiny mics that capture clear voice audio for presentations, interviews, or films. These mics are usually rechargeable or powered by small batteries.
- Drum Microphones: Drum mics are dynamic mics that are specially designed to be used with drums. These microphones can withstand high sound pressure levels and don’t need phantom power.
- Boundary Microphones: Boundary mics, also known as pressure-sensitive microphones, use a flat plate to pick up sound and are ideal for capturing room acoustics or group discussions. Most of these mics require phantom power.
Each mic type offers unique features that are tailored to different applications. You can even experiment with the different mic types for different purposes to get unique sounds!
