The team at Mojo Hand FX has dropped something special for fans of retro gaming and experimental textures: the SMPLoFi Retro Degrader, a pedal inspired by the Super Nintendo's groundbreaking S-SMP audio system. Before the SNES, game audio was limited to simple PSG tones or FM synthesis. Then came the S-SMP, secretly developed by Sony engineer Ken Kutaragi. His chip brought fully digital 16-bit samples and primitive DSP effects like echo to the gaming world, something almost unheard of in 1990.
